The Connected Mason: Modernizing the Classroom for the Future

Masonry might be one of the world's oldest professions, but that does not mean the classroom should look like it's stuck in the past. Today's students are "digital natives," raised on interactive technology and instant feedback loops. As Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs compete for funding and enrollment against robotics and computer science courses, the integration of advanced technology is becoming essential to attract the next generation of students.

The MCAA Wall Evaluator Kit allows masonry programs to leap forward, combining traditional masonry with cutting-edge 3D analysis, Augmented Reality (AR), and artificial intelligence. This hybrid approach not only helps students learn faster but also positions masonry programs as high-tech engineering pathways.

Visual Learning for a Visual Trade
Masonry students are typically visual, hands-on learners. Traditional feedback, like a letter grade on a scorecard or a verbal critique, can sometimes feel abstract. It tells a student they made a mistake, but it doesn't always help them visualize the solution.

The Wall Evaluator software changes the feedback loop entirely. By scanning a wall with the EINSTAR handheld 3D scanner, which captures both the geometry and full-color texture of the surface in a single pass, and applying a digital Heat Map, the software literally paints the physical project in color on the screen:

  • Red Zones: Show exactly where the wall is high or bowing out, quantified to the tenth of a millimeter.
  • Blue Zones: Show exactly where the wall is low or dished in, with the exact deviation displayed at every point.
  • Green Zones: Indicate perfect alignment within the configurable tolerance band.

The Wall Evaluator Heat Map instantly highlights surface deviations to the tenth of a millimeter.

The Heat Map is not a rough visual estimate. The software computes the elevation of every vertex in the selected region relative to a best-fit reference plane, processing millions of data points to produce a per-point accuracy that no spirit level or straightedge can match. This immediate visual feedback creates an "aha!" moment for students.

Furthermore, the software's Compare Scans feature, powered by the M3C2 (Multiscale Model to Model Cloud Comparison) algorithm used in professional geospatial analysis, allows instructors to overlay a 3D scan of a student's Day 1 wall with their end-of-semester project.

The M3C2 algorithm visualizes skill development by comparing a student's early work against their final project.

From Subjective Grading to Objective Data
In a traditional shop class, grading can often be subjective, relying on how an instructor reads a tape measure or holds a level. If two different instructors grade the same wall, they should produce the exact same score, but human variance often gets in the way.

The MCAA Wall Evaluator removes the "eye test." Using built-in scoring rules, the software provides over 40 specialized measurement and analysis tools across multiple categories. At the end of a project, students receive a PDF scorecard that serves as a verifiable "Digital Portfolio."

Shifting from the traditional "eye test" to objective, math-based grading.

Beyond the Scorecard: A Complete Data Trail
The scoring system goes deeper than a single number. Every measurement is categorized automatically: Plumb, Level, Straightedge, Measurements, Alignment, Joint Quality, Surface Analysis, with per-category subtotals and a grand total.

Detailed measurement tools capture millions of data points.

Seeing Inside the Mortar: Joint Quality Analysis
One of the most difficult aspects of masonry grading is evaluating what you cannot easily see: the quality of mortar joints hidden between bricks. The software includes dedicated joint analysis tools that use the 3D scan data to peer beneath the surface.

The software uses machine learning to peer inside the joints, automatically detecting voids (highlighted in red).

Building Before Laying: The Virtual Wall Builder
Modern masons need to understand layout, estimating, and blueprints before they ever mix mortar. To support this, the software includes a full-featured Wall Builder module. Instructors and students can design virtual skills walls by placing bricks and blocks from a digital 3D object library.

The virtual Wall Builder module allows students to design complex skills walls and generate blueprints digitally.

Program Management: Running Your Department on Data
The Wall Evaluator operates as part of a larger ecosystem: the MCAA Masonry Portal. For department heads and CTE coordinators, this portal serves as the command center for program management. It consolidates student enrollment, instructor assignment, and cohort organization into a single, cloud-based interface. Rather than relying on physical scorecards or disparate spreadsheets, administrators can manage the entire grading lifecycle from a unified dashboard.

The centralized dashboard allows administrators to manage the entire grading lifecycle from a single login.

Data Synchronization and Longitudinal Tracking
The core functionality relies on real-time synchronization between the shop and the office. When a student scans a project using the desktop software, the data, including scorecards and specific measurements, automatically syncs to the web portal.

This creates a permanent, digital performance record. Administrators can access longitudinal data to analyze a student's development over time, such as tracking improvements in plumb accuracy from the start of the semester to graduation, or identifying specific struggles with joint quality.

Analytics dashboards provide data-driven insights for individualized instruction and longitudinal tracking.

Curriculum Mapping and Milestones
The platform is designed to operationalize industry standards. Programs can input specific skill milestones based on NCCER credentials or institutional rubrics. The system then automates the tracking process:

  • Automated Verification: A milestone is marked "complete" only when the student’s objective data (e.g., heat map deviation or joint fill ratio) falls within the preset tolerance.
  • Curriculum Sequencing: Administrators can structure full semesters as a sequence of graded checkpoints, monitoring class advancement through projects of increasing complexity.

Defining skill milestones and tracking student progress against industry standards.

This "Building Before Laying" approach allows students to visualize the bond patterns required for their curriculum sequence before mixing mortar.

The Bond Library supports curriculum sequencing, allowing students to advance through projects of increasing complexity.

Analytics for Accreditation and Reporting
For multi-site institutions and state directors, the portal provides high-level visibility. Role-based access ensures that stakeholders only view relevant data while aggregating analytics for reporting purposes.

  • Grant Compliance: The system generates algorithm-verified data suitable for Perkins V reporting, replacing subjective letter grades with evidence of skill acquisition.
  • Inter-Campus Comparison: Directors can compare pass rates and specific skill metrics across different campuses to identify resource gaps or effective teaching techniques.
