It is one of history’s most ambitious demonstrations of what skilled masons can accomplish with brick, mortar, and a practical understanding of structural behavior earned through experience rather than computer modeling.Most of Europe’s great Gothic cathedrals were built primarily from stone. In the Albi region, however, quality building stone was not readily available in the quantities needed for a project of this scale. Builders turned instead to local clay deposits and developed a construction strategy centered on brick.The result was unlike anything being built elsewhere in Europe.
