He learned about equipment, operated forklifts, and gradually transitioned into fieldwork. However, it wasn't long before he realized that the physically demanding work was not his true passion.Kent pursued his education at a community college, working part-time as a project manager during his studies. This experience sparked his interest in project management, where he found himself involved in purchase and change orders, further deepening his understanding of the industry.Taking the Reins: From Project Manager to PresidentIn 2002, Kent faced a pivotal decision when several project managers left their company to start their own business. His father, Mackie, presented him with an opportunity: continue his studies for two more years, or dive headfirst into the business.Kent chose the latter, stepping into the office and eventually taking on the role of project manager. Over the years, his dedication paid off. Seven to eight years ago, he became the president of Brazos Masonry, gradually becoming a part owner, and ensuring the continuity of his father's legacy.Witnessing Growth and TransformationDuring his tenure, Kent witnessed the incredible growth of Brazos Masonry. From humble beginnings with annual revenues of $12 to $13 million to a $66 million company operating throughout Texas, the company's evolution has been remarkable.Kent fondly reflects on the technological transformation over the years:Today, the company boasts over 500 employees, and the digital age has ushered in efficiency and precision. Their evolution is evident not just in the office but also in their approach to fieldwork, safety, and employee well-being.A Commitment to Safety and InnovationSafety has become a top priority at Brazos Masonry. Kent implemented significant changes, ensuring all employees wear matching vests and hard hats. He involves his team in decisions, allowing them to choose the best safety gear.Safety isn't the only area where innovation takes center stage. Kent remains committed to embracing new technologies and ideas, constantly seeking ways to improve the workplace environment for both field and office teams.A Legacy in Masonry Education and the MCAAKent's involvement with the Mason Contractors Association of America (MCAA) has been instrumental in the growth of the organization. He has played a key role in the marketing committee, co-chairing efforts to expand membership.The growth of the MCAA is a testament to the dedication of its members, with Kent highlighting the valuable networking and resources available to members.Balancing Family and PassionOutside the masonry world, Kent nurtures his passion for classic cars. Recently, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by acquiring a 1969 Camaro, blending modern engine performance with classic charm. This love for cars is shared with his family, providing cherished moments cruising around on weekends.Kent's family life is equally fulfilling. His wife shares his love for travel, and as a family, they've explored destinations like Scotland, where Kent indulged in his other favorite pastime—golf.
